Fall at Wilderness Lodge
1. How far are you from major cities within/outside of
North Carolina?
We are located:
about 3.5 hour drive from Atlanta, GA
about 3.5 hour drive from Charlotte, NC
about 2.5 hour drive from Knoxville, TN
about 2 hour drive from Greenville, SC
about 3.5 hour drive from Columbia, SC
approximately 11 hour drive from Orlando, FL
Asheville Airport is the closest airport; 42 miles/1 hour+-
2. Is their privacy at Wilderness Lodge?
YES! Secluded on our 200 acres with cascading trees
and a creek, there are NO BRIGHT LIGHTS, NO NOISE,
NO TRAFFIC. For your added privacy there is a gate
at the driveway that you can also keep closed (posted to
keep unregistered guests away, too).
3. Do I need a four wheel drive vehicle to come to
Wilderness Lodge?
Usually, you do not. However, in winter if ice/snow, or
very muddy conditions it would be necessary. The access is
gravel/unpaved driveway. 5 MPH is about the right
speed for the driveway. There are no winding
switchbacks and the greatest incline is just in front of the
house. Low riding vehicles, small compact cars, and sport
cars are NOTsuitable for this driveway.
4. Can we bring our cat or dog?
Yes. Wilderness Lodge is pet friendly. Save money
for the costs of boarding, or the hassle of finding someone
to watch your pet. IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES RELATED
TO ANIMALS, THIS MAY NOT BE THE PLACE FOR YOU
AS DOGS AND CATS HAVE BEEN HERE.
5. Is there cell phone service at Wilderness Lodge?
It depends on your service provider and exact location
at the house. There is a landline in the house, you need
to bring a calling card/credit card to make long distance
calls.
6. What do we need to bring to Wilderness Lodge?
We have tried to ensure that we offer all the amenities you
need, including some toiletry items in case you forget
something. Depending on the time of year that you
visit... you should be prepared for cooler evenings in
spring/summer/fall, and in winter it can be cold, and even
snow.
Clothing- light jacket/sweater for spring/summer/fall,
and coat/gloves/hat/boots for winter.
Footwear- open toed shoes, sandals, high heels are not
practical to wear in the mountains. There's no sand here,
and the terrain can be rugged. You should wear sneakers,
boots, shoes with good soles. If you plan to hike, make
sure you wear appropriate hiking boots and proper socks.
Make sure children are attired appropriately as well.
Camera/video camera
A book or two, although we do have a selection of
books in the loft.
7. Where is the closest store if I forgot something?
There are a few general stores located in the area
within about a 15 minute drive. We highly recommend
buying your groceries on the way to Wilderness Lodge.
It may not be convenient for you to travel to town
depending on what time you arrive. You may not want to
leave Wilderness Lodge once you get there and start to
unwind.
8. Where can we go out to eat?
- Trust General Store & Cafe- at intersection
of Rt. 209 and Rt. 63; 1/2 mile before entrance
to Rock House Rd. (to Wilderness Lodge). Dine on the
open deck by the creek or in the cafe. Catering available
for weddings at Wilderness Lodge. Fresh baked pastries.
9. We don't know what to do in the area. What do you
suggest?
At Wilderness Lodge you will find an information guide
and brochures that will be a source of information for you
during your stay.
There are a wide variety of things to do in Madison
County and the surrounding areas. You won't be bored
here unless you want to be! Also, you can click on
"Things to do" page for information.
If bad weather leaves you "stuck" at the cabin, there
are an assortment of movies, board games, playing cards,
color books/crayons (for the younger folk).
10. Is smoking permitted?
There is no smoking permitted in Wilderness Lodge, or
the Nest apartment, on the deck. You may smoke at the
fire pot only. Please be courteous and do not leave butts in
the gravel, or grassy areas.
11. We just had a "spur of the moment" idea to "get
away" for a couple days. Can we come to Wilderness
Lodge on short notice?
YES! Check the "Availability Calendar", and also call
us (in case we had an unexpected cancellation). If the lodge is available we
may be able to offer you a "short-notice" discount.
12. I notice that there is a "cleaning fee" charged.
Should we leave our dirty dishes in the sink?
No. We expect that you will wash your dishes and put
them away. Our cleaning fee covers laundering linens/
towels, and overall thorough cleaning of the lodge (inside
& out), hot tub, and grounds surrounding the lodge. We do
not waive the cleaning fee and allow guests to clean to
ensure that the property is cleaned to the same standard
after each guests.
13. I've heard that North Carolina is a great place to
hunt deer, and more. Can I hunt at Wilderness
Lodge?
No. We do not permit hunting or target practice on the
Wilderness Lodge property, or property adjoining it.
14. Can't wait to ride my Harley through the
mountains, can we get it to Wilderness Lodge?
You won't be able to ride the Harley (or other bike
for that matter) onto our property as the road
is not suitable for motorcycles. However, we can offer
you a secure location to park it whether you trailor it,
or ride it, and we'll make sure you get from
there to the lodge (in our Jeep). We welcome bikers,
just want to be sure that you're aware that the
driveway access was not designed for motorcyles.

15. Where is the closest hospital?
Haywood Regional Medical Center is located in
Waynesville, near Highway 209. Upon calling 9-1-1 for a
medical emergency the Spring Creek Volunteer Fire
Department will respond, and an ambulance is also
dispatched. Some fire department volunteers are
E.M.T's. In certain emergenices, fire department or
ambulance personnel may request a medivac helicopter
for transport. The chopper lands at the Spring Creek
Volunteer Fire Department on Highway 209 about 10
minutes from Wilderness Lodge.
16. We enjoy a taste of the "spirits". Where can we
buy beer, wine or liquor?
Madison County is a "dry" county. Beer and wine
can be purchased at the campground in Hot Springs,
or at grocery stores and WalMart in Waynesville. There
is also an ABC Store in Waynesville to purchase
liquor. Or, simply fill your cooler and bring your own!
